Purpose:
The objects of the charity have varied over the years and include:
- For hospitals, hospices and other forms of residential care or provision of health care. For those who are sick or in need and for other institutions providing medical assistance. For those in financial need, provided that no part of the income shall be applied directly in relief of rates, taxes or other public funds, but may be applied in supplementing relief or assistance provided out of public funds
- For the relief of poor, aged or sick members of the clergy and their spouses, widows, widowers and dependants
- For relief, rehabilitation and training of disabled persons including disabled ex-servicemen and war widows
- For the promotion of moral welfare or social service
- For the relief and rehabilitation of those persons who are or have been slaves or serfs and their dependants who are in need or distress or for preventing the seizure of persons for slavery or serfdom
- For the relief of poor, aged or sick persons and their spouses, widows, widowers and dependants
- For any medical research
Available Funding
There are four different categories of grant funding in operation:
Main Grants Programme -The Main Grants Programme is for grants of £10,000 or over. There are two types of Main Grant – Capital Grants and Revenue Grants
Small Grants Programme-The Small Grants Programme is for grants of under £10,000 per year. There are two types of small grant – County Grants and Small Grants
Medical Research-Grants of up to three years for research undertaken by recognized ‘Centres of Excellence’
Holiday Grants for Children-One-off grants of up to £3,000 for organisations, schools, youth groups etc specifically for holidays or outings for children under the age of 13 who are disabled or who live in areas of high deprivation.
What they will Fund
Activities which fall into one of the following categories may be eligible for financial support:
- Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME)
- Carers
- Community Service
- Domestic and Sexual Violence
- Drugs & Alcohol/Substance Misuse
- Ex-Service Men and Women
- Family Services
- Healthcare
- Homelessness
- Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender
- Mental Health
- Older People
- Prisoners and Ex-offenders
- Prostitution & Trafficking
- Refugees & Asylum Seekers
- Young People
Who can Apply
The charity does not fund individuals; the only exceptions are the Poor Kindred of Henry Smith and individual members of the clergy of the Church of England.
Other grants may be paid to organisations in the following fields:
- Hospitals, dispensaries, infirmaries, homes for incurables, convalescent homes and institutions for providing the poor with surgical appliances or medical aid
- Charities for obtaining for children of the poor of the administrative area of Greater London the benefit of a visit to the country or other change of air
- Charities for the relief of aged persons of small income
- Institutions for medical research
- Charities for the assistance of widows and children of the clergy
- Charities for the benefit of disabled ex-servicemen and war widows
- Charities for the rehabilitation and training of disabled persons
- Charities for the promotion of moral welfare and social service
- Organisations, bodies or persons engaged in the restoration of slaves or serfs to freedom and other related activities.
How to Apply
Applications can be submitted at any time during the year. The Trustees meet quarterly in March, June, September and December to consider appeals.
