Stakeholder Consultation – A Strong Community: Building Resilience in Newham

The London Borough of Newham has been working to develop answers to the issues facing Newham such as high levels of worklessness and low life expectancy when compared to other areas. It is exploring how the vision of making Newham a major business location where people choose to live, work and stay can be achieved.

In this consultation the London Borough of Newham shares its ideas on a new approach for local government and the community, and how they think real changes can be made to the lives of Newham residents. The appraoch in the consultation is to create a resilient borough, building on concepts such as capabilities, empowerment and much of the research on social mobility. However, in contrast to much of the current government rhetoric on poverty and social mobility it seeks to recognise the importance of external factors in shaping our lives.
