Do you have a project that would benefit from expert help? University College London (UCL) is planning to develop a new campus in Stratford. As a result, it has expanded the engagement work it currently carries out in Camden and Islington into Newham and has appointed a new Public Engagement Coordinator for East London, Kim Townsend, who is keen to develop new links with local communities in the borough. UCL and Newham council recently ended discussions on the redevelopment of the Carpenters Estate, but UCL has reaffirmed its commitment to identify and develop on a Stratford site.

Kim told NVSC:

Our academic staff, many of whom are world leaders in their field, may be able to collaborate with you on a community project. That could be a piece of research, activities with community groups, workshops and mentoring, or just lending their advice.

We also do schools outreach work, with the aim of widening participation in university and encouraging young people to aim higher.

UCL’s Volunteering Services Unit also has a database of students with specific skills who have signed up and are ready to volunteer with communities.

If you have a good idea that could utilise the skills and resources that UCL has to offer then get in touch with Kim to talk about your project and see if UCL staff and students could help.

Kim can be contacted at k.townsend@ucl.ac.uk or on 020 7679 7333. For more information on UCL’s Public Engagement Unit, including case studies, see: www.ucl.ac.uk/public-engagement

As part of our new direction from April 2013, NVSC has launched a survey that has been designed to find out more about how voluntary, community and faith groups in Newham cooperate with each other whether it is possible to develop new collaborative networks of local groups what obstacles stand in the way of effective [...]

As part of our new direction from April 2013, NVSC has launched a survey that has been designed to find out more about

how voluntary, community and faith groups in Newham cooperate with each other

whether it is possible to develop new collaborative networks of local groups

what obstacles stand in the way of effective partnerships and

how you think a successful collaboration might work.

NVSC believes that it is difficult to complain that the voice of the not-for-profit sector is ignored when collectively we are unclear what we want to articulate or who is best able to represent these messages. It is therefore vital to understand what networks, if any, groups are already part of and what new networks they want to see developed to better articulate their voices. This is the starting point for greater cooperation and closer collaboration, with local groups prepared to work more closely together, share their ideas and experiences and participate in networks that try to make the most of our increasingly limited resources.

All responses to the survey are strictly confidential. Although we plan to share the overall conclusions widely, we will not share individual responses with others.
