The first week of February saw the start of our work stream meetings.
These meetings had been established at the request of the Voluntary sector, who knowing they had lots to contribute to the renewal agenda, felt as though they had been excluded from the NRF process.
For whatever reason, either as a result of workstream 'champions' inability to recognise the sectors value or because those organisations who had been invited to the table did not feel able to participate, NVSC organised these meetings.
There intention - to facilitate partnership working, networking and in the hope that the sector would be able to put together projects to deliver the LSP's agenda.
A total of 8 meetings were held - there were no takers for some of the streams, and with the exception of one everyone felt the meetings were productive and worthwhile.
You didn't disappoint! The ideas flowed. Some were innovative, some just plain common sense, others quite challenging, but most importantly all were positive.
All the ideas will be forwarded to the work stream appraisal panel, who will ensure they are, if at all possible, passed on to the "champions" for further work.
The Barriers to Employment theme group will be invited to a summit being convened by the Chair of the Civic Partnership. There, they will be able to share their ideas. The groups looking at Young People, Crime and Anti Social Behaviour are continuing to meet.
The best outcome of these targeted meetings will be greater communication between us and hopefully sustainable partnerships.
If you would like further information on NVSC's work streams contact Sarah Ruiz for details.

When Newham was allocated The Neighbourhood Renewal Fund, it was also awarded the Community Chest and the Community Learning Chest. Both are grant programme that give grants of between £50 and £5,000 to small voluntary and community sector groups.
The main aim of the fund is to encourage small voluntary and community sector groups to become more involved in community activities.
The grants are only for small voluntary and community sector organisations, and especially those groups who are working to benefit people who are in hard-to-reach groups. The fund can also assist groups with training for individuals that will have direct benefit to communities in Newham. Priority is given to the smallest organisations with 2 workers or less and groups with a turnover of under £50,000. It can also assist groups who have been unable to attract mainstream funding.
Examples of things the grant could pay for are: Management committee training, carers can take part in local activities, a sports day or other community event, printing a community newsletter, hiring a room for a meeting, essential IT equipment for your group, training or exchange visits to other projects, maintaining playgrounds, renovating disused premises, start up costs for a new group, a small pilot project and much more. Overleaf are a list of groups that have received Community Chest grants over the last year, how much they received and the grants purpose. These are just examples, the grant is very flexible and can be used to pay for anything which contributes to the aims. Applications must demonstrate value for money. The golden rule is to ask for what you need, rather than trying to spend as much money as you can.
If you want to know more or for an application form and details of how to apply, contact Deb Cozier at Newham Training Network on 020 8503 5933 or email at mail@ntn.org.uk.
If you need help or advice about planning a suitable project, or filling in your form, contact Deb Cozier for a list of workshop dates.
Joes Community Sewing Project has received a grant from the Community Chest to assist with the costs of putting on a fashion show. The show will exhibit the student's work, which they have completed over the last year, with the clothing being modelled by the students themselves.
Project founder Dejoel Sanga a qualified tailor, designer and pattern cutter, is the projects full time Co-ordinator. Dejoel informed me 'JCSP was established is to relieve poverty and financial hardship amongst refugees and the unemployed living in Newham and the surrounding boroughs. This is achieved through training that provides them with skills on garment fashion design techniques, garment making, freehand cutting and other sewing techniques.'
With no mainstream funding Dejoel volunteers his time enabling student's to progress into a career in the fashion industry, start their own business or progress onto further studies.'
In 2003, 90 students completed the training programme and this academic year will see the project offering City & Guilds qualifications having just received their accreditation.
Tickets for the fashion show can be bought for a donation of £2.00 and a small financial contribution will get you fed and watered too.
The fashion show will take place in April (date to be confirmed) 2004 and bookings can now be made by contacting Dejoel on 0208 555 0133.
